Description

Before putting your RV away for the season you will need to take the necessary steps to properly winterize it. Knowing how to winterize an RV will save you time preparing your unit for storage or use during the cold winter months. Winterizing kits make it easy for those who do not know how to winterize an RV without fear of doing something wrong.

Some companies offer winterizing kits as an option when purchasing an RV. If a winterizing kit was not an option when you purchased your unit, you can purchase one and install it yourself. These kits are easily installed on the side of the RV’s water pump. Basically this kit turns on and off the valves used for adding antifreeze into the system.

Even if you do not know how to winterize an RV the next steps are pretty easy. Especially when you have the winterizing kit already installed by the manufacturer. First you will want to drain all of the water out of the system and hoses, including the water tank and valves. Make sure to shut off the water heater bypass valve before filling the system with antifreeze.

Run the hose from the system down into a bottle of antifreeze. Turn on the water pump and faucets until you see antifreeze running through the entire system.

The most important thing you need to remember when learning how to winterize an RV is to make sure there is absolutely no water left behind in any of the hoses or RV system. To do this, run the hose into a second jug of antifreeze and go into the RV. Pull up the toilet and turn it on until you see nothing but antifreeze running through it. Dump it out and do not forget to check the sprayer too. Repeat this for the kitchen and bathroom faucets and shower.

The easy way to winterize your RV is with the winterizing kit, that's already installed just on this side of the water pump. Some companies offer it as an option. If not, you can buy it as an aftermarket. And literally all it is is a valve. By turning this valve, and putting the hose down in the antifreeze, it's gonna draw antifreeze into the system. So we'll just go in and open up the faucets until we see pink antifreeze. This unit happens to have one already built in. So we go down here and we see we've got our antifreeze hose right here. The first thing we want to do is make sure we drain all the water out of this system. We've got our valves in here, get it out of the freshwater system. And then with our valve here, inline with the valve is telling we're coming out of the water tank, up through the water pump. By turning it to this position right here, I'm gonna draw it out of this hose. So all I have to do is bring my hose down here, turn on my water pump, and then go inside and just open up the faucets until I see pink antifreeze. So we've just drawn almost an entire gallon into our system with our water pump. It has shut off now. So I know we've got all our lines inside are full. We're gonna go inside and open up the faucets and the showers and the toilet and everything, make sure that all the lines are blown out. But we are gonna need some more antifreeze. So I'm gonna put this into this jug. 'Cause as I open those faucets I'm going to still have some water in the lines. So it's going to be drawing more. We're probably gonna use about two gallons of antifreeze in this to get all the lines filled with it. Okay, we wanna make sure you do our toilet as well, because we've got water lines that are coming to there. So we're gonna just pull it up. We see right away, we've got antifreeze coming through. Just dump that out, and don't forget your sprayer as well. We see we got some clear water here, so we're gonna let it run until we start to get some pink antifreeze through there. So we've drawn antifreeze into our kitchen faucet, our bathroom sink, our shower, and the toilet and sprayer. Let's go out and see how much antifreeze we used. So we just filled all the lines inside, opened all the faucets, the water filter system, the shower, the toilet, everything. And I see we did about another gallon in there. So now I know I have my entire system filled in the inside of it. I don't have to worry about anything freezing. And I can store my vehicle or I can even use it a little bit in the winter time.
