Description

We’ve received questions from multiple Club members about RV towing laws, wondering whether there’s anything they need to be aware of when hauling a specific kind of RV or trailer. The answer is it depends where you’ll be traveling and what type of towing you plan to do.

To elaborate on this point, RV expert Dave Solberg explains how to look up the rules and regulations upheld in the states where you expect to travel. A question came in from an RV Repair Club member asking, "Are there any towing laws I need to be aware of?" Each state has individual rules and regulations when it comes to towing. Certain states do have limited speed limits. Illinois, for one, if you are an RV, you can only go 55 miles an hour on certain roads. Some places require different supplemental brakes for different weight ratings. Iowa happens to be 3,000 pounds. New York, New Jersey happens to be 1,000, I believe it is. So it is important that you look up road use laws and it will give you the towing regulations for each state. Because you are seeing a lot more of the DOT officers stopping RVers and checking some of these regulations, and you could get a ticket.
