While on a recent RV trip, RV Lifestyle and Repair Contributors, Lisa and Jason McEwen, took their family on an adventure to the Brevard Zoo. Located in Melbourne, Florida, the zoo is on the Space Coast and is just 30 minutes from the Kennedy Space Center. It’s a small zoo, but popular, with 400,000 visitors coming through the zoo each year.
The Zoo Layout
The zoo is spread across 75-acres and is home to more than 195 species from Florida, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It’s broken up into loops, like many zoos, where you can explore different areas including Expedition Africa, Lands of Change, Wild Florida, Rainforest Revealed, and Paws On.
Our girls were more than happy to lead the way as we walked through the trails visiting unique animals.
Favorite Exhibits
One of the coolest exhibits is the Kangaroo Walkabout, where you follow a trail and see kangaroos lounging in the sun, just inches away. While they’re inside an enclosure, you can get quite close to them on the trail. We learned kangaroos regularly sun themselves, just as they’re doing now.
Our girls also liked the River Monsters. We saw Arapaimas, which are native to the Amazon. These giant fish can reach up to 400 pounds and can grow to almost 10 feet long.
Kayak Tour
While the animals are certainly the highlight, Brevard Zoo is one of few that gives you a chance to see the animal’s habitats through a guided kayak tour. For an additional fee, you go out with a small group of people – including a guide – and paddle very close to the animals.
As we paddled along, a zebra came right down to the water to visit. Adalyn and Jason were very close to this native African creature.
The tour is about 30-minutes long and the guide makes stops to tell you about the animals you see. The Brevard Zoo is a delight to visit, our family made new RV trip memories, especially the kayak tour.
