Description

Traveling in general with young kids can be a challenge, but RVing with kids comes with its own unique hurdles. You’re on the road a lot, you’re all together in close quarters, and your plans can change in an instant. Needless to say, there are a few tips on how best to RV with kids. If you’re doing the same, here are a few tricks we can pass along:

Bring road trip entertainment

You’re inevitably going to hear, “I’m bored” or “Are we there yet?” So, try to have a few activities ready to give the kids in the car to take their minds off the miles ahead. You can pack an entertainment bag full of car goodies that sits in between their seats.

Get out when you need to

If tensions rise on your way to the campsite, take a break. Stop at a travel center or rest area and reset.

Keep your itinerary flexible

No matter what your plans, whether it is a beach day at the park or sightseeing, be flexible. Nothing kills a day faster than a cranky child, so plan your most important activity in the morning. If the kids’ moods take a turn, skip out of the other activities and head back to the campsite.

Bring snacks

You can solve a lot of problems by just asking, “Do you want to take a break and have a snack?” Aside from problem-solving, kids are always hungry, so having snacks on hand is always helpful.

Pack simple meals

You don’t want to spend your entire time in the kitchen prepping meals, so keep your meals simple. Plan on doing sandwiches, foil meals you can toss on the grill, and camping staples like hamburgers and hot dogs.

Bring board games

After a long day of fun outside, consider winding down with a board game or two. Bring five or six games for each trip.

Try to find a campground with on-site activities

If you can, stay somewhere with an on-site beach, playground, or other activities.

Hi, everyone, I'm Lisa McEwen. We started RVing in 2019. We are weekend warrior-type campers. These are our girls, Adeline and Riley. They are seven and six now, but when we started out, they were just three and four years old. Traveling with kids certainly presents some challenges. For starters, you are on the road a lot. You're in close quarters, and your plans can change in an instant. So if you are out there RVing with kids, just like us, here are some tips we can pass along. You are inevitably going to hear, "I'm bored," or "Are we there yet?" So try to have a few activities ready to give the kids in the car, to take their mind off those miles ahead. We have an entertainment bag full of car goodies that sits right in between the seats. If tensions rise on your way to the campsite, take a break. Stop at a travel center or rest area and reset. Ready, go! No matter what your plans, be it a beach day at the park, or sightseeing, be flexible. Nothing kills a day faster than a cranky child, so plan your most important activities in the morning, and if the kids' moods take a turn, you can skip out on the other activities and head back to the campsite. When you're RVing, you wanna see and do as much as possible, but you also run the risk of doing too much. And that can make everyone miserable. So try to spread those activities out, and be okay with calling it quits if you need to. Cheezits! What have you got? Pretzels. I am amazed at the problems I can cure by simply asking, "Do you wanna take a break and have a snack?" Aside from problem-solving, if your kids are like mine, they're always hungry. So having snacks on hand is always helpful. You don't wanna spend all of your time preparing meals, so make sure you keep things simple. We actually have quite a few videos on our website that have some great prepared-ahead meals, and also some recipes that you can do right at the campsite that are fast and easy. Be sure to check those out. But keep it simple with things like sandwiches, foil meals, and hamburgers and hot dogs, that kind of thing. Ha! Lily's are gonna fall. We're playing KerPlunk. After a long, fun day outside, consider winding down with a board game or two. We always bring five or six games for each trip. The girls enjoy picking each one out for each trip that we take. But we have a few staples, of course. Uno seems to be one of our favorite games. Uno! Uno, too! These games will vary based on your kid's age. If you can, stay somewhere with an onsite beach, playground, or other activities. We stayed at Jellystone Park in Western New York, where they have things like mini golf, an arcade, and a small lake to go fishing, for example. We also stayed in Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys, where there's a beach just feet from the campsite. So it makes it really easy to entertain the kids without having to go far. RVing with kids is such an awesome way to travel as a family, but you definitely have to be patient and make the most out of every situation, especially when things go wrong. Until next time!
